On Tuesday, the 17th of December, Luigi Mangione was indicted for murder as an act of terrorism, among 10 other charges he is facing as a result of the shooting of Brian Thompson, UnitedHealthCare CEO.

Luigi Mangione is a 26 year old man who comes from a wealthy family, is a college valedictorian and graduate and has worked in IT. According to multiple reports from close friends and family, Luigi didn’t seem like the type of person to do something of this magnitude. However, Luigi seemingly wanted to be caught. When he was detained, police found a handwritten manifesto and the murder weapon and the attachments for it. Mangione carried all of the evidence with him to send a message to the people of the United States and also a message to insurance companies, who from his perspective are perpetrators of ‘corporate greed’, as part of his manifesto read.

Mangione and his lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo now also look set to waive his right to extradition, and if so he will attend an extradition hearing at a Pennsylvania court on Thursday to arrange for him to be moved to New York, where he will fight this indictment.

The police have also condemned the response from the public to this case, with New York City Police commissioner Jessica Tisch saying, “Social media has erupted with praise for this cowardly act”, referring to the surprisingly positive reaction everyone has had to this case. "This was a frightening, well-planned, targeted murder that was intended to cause shock and attention and intimidation," was what Alvin Bragg, the District Attorney of Manhattan, had to say about the case. It is also Mr Bragg who claims that Mangione is going to waive his right to extradition.

If all goes the way of the prosecutors, Luigi Mangione could be extradited within the next 30 days, and the criminal trial will commence. With the facts of the case that have been discovered, it is going to be extremely hard for Mangione to get away with his actions, but I’m sure he will not go down without a fight. With his charges now upgraded to an act of terrorism, his sentencing is more than likely set to be more harsh than originally expected. More to come.
