Joe Biden and his party have made the executive decision to release 11 prisoners from Guantanamo Bay Prison. It is reported that all of these inmates have links to terrorist group Al-Qaeda, with two of the prisoners, Sahayl Abdul Anam al Sharabi and Moath Hamza Ahmed al-Alwi reported to have been Osama Bin Laden's bodyguards before being imprisoned, and one other detainee was allegedly involved in a failed 9/11 hijacking plot.

Biden's administration is releasing detainees from Guantanamo Bay in an attempt to lower the amount of offenders being held there. Ultimately the goal for Biden before he gives up office is to close this detention centre for good. Guantanamo Bay Detention Centre has a bad reputation for mistreatment of inmates. Sharqawi al-Hajj, a detainee among those released, is said to have undergone hunger strikes and multiple hospitalisations whilst being held in the detention centre. It is also reported that after he was first arrested, he was put through 2 years of interrogation and torture by the CIA

The detainee number at Guantanamo Bay is currently sitting at 15 inmates, which is the lowest it has been since the facility's inception in 2002. The prisoners in question have been released from Guantanamo Bay and transferred to Oman following thorough interviews and assessments to gauge whether or not these inmates qualify for a release. The men will most likely not be returned to their home countries, amid ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
